21-27 November was National HIV Testing Week (NHTW) 2016!
National HIV Testing Week is a campaign which raises awareness of the importance of testing for HIV, and aims to reduce stigma around people living with the condition. HIV Prevention England were leading on the national campaign, you can visit the website here.
In Buckinghamshire, Terrence Higgins Trust led this campaign this year and adapted it for our local services and needs. As well as HIV Testing, in Buckinghamshire we focussed on Chlamydia testing, and the Ccard Condom Scheme.
Terrence Higgins Trust worked in partnership with Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and Public Health.
What happened locally?
The local Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) staff from bSHaW were supporting the campaign here in Bucks by setting up ‘pop-up’ rapid HIV and chlamydia testing clinics for Students, as well as giving out free condoms and offering advice on healthy relationships.
If you’re a student you may have seen THT in Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) on Tuesday 22nd November from 10am – 2pm, or in the University of Buckingham on Wednesday 23rd from 1-5pm, or in Amersham & Wycombe College, Flackwell Heath Campus on Thursday 24th 10am-1pm.
You guys managed a total of 31 HIV tests and 68 Chlamydia tests!! Well done you! There were competitions in each of the universities where students could get tested for chlamydia and nominate a sports team or society. The team or society with the most nominations will win a cash prize for their team funds! Nominations are being counted as you read this….
You may also have noticed that there were videos displayed in GPs surgeries across the County. You can watch the video below.
If you are a member of the public you can visit any of our bSHaW Clinics across Bucks and get tested for HIV free and confidentially. Find your nearest clinic.
What next? If you haven’t already, then get yourself down to a clinic and tested! You can also help to raise awareness and reduce stigma by spreading the message. Talk to your friends and family about HIV, wear a red ribbon for World AIDS Day, and help us to get the message out by retweeting from @PHBucks.
